The Film School
We believe that the knowledge and means to create films should be available to everyone, especially Black and non-white people who are affected by several unique obstacles, including being underrepresented and creatively restricted within the mainstream industry. Our free, year-long film school aims to provide new and emerging filmmakers with mentorship and guidance to create confident, imaginative, and curious filmmakers who are interested in the transformative potential of filmmaking. The film school sessions are led by established Black and non-white filmmakers, educators, and collectives who are part of the Other Cinemas community and who have lived experiences and personal understanding of the challenges specific to racialised filmmakers within the industry.
Through monthly sessions and filmmaking tasks, students are offered the chance to develop a holistic set of skills, explore different dimensions of filmmaking (ethics, editing, lighting, storyboarding, screenwriting etc.), think critically about the politics and economies of filmmaking and sharing, as well as develop a substantial body of work.
Now in its third year, the film school has supported 24 students, helping them grow and mature their artistic capacities to tell meaningful stories on screen. A central aspect of the film school is also creating networks for collaboration and peer-to-peer learning which we believe to be essential to building a supportive community of artists invested in each other's well being, creative development, and wider cultural life.
Every month we share work created by our students. Click above to see the latest films.
